Wouldn't it be nice to know that every time you took a mouthful of healthy food any cancer cells lurking in your body would take fright and commit suicide?

Well that's probably what happens when you drink a bottle of REAL ginger ale, have a cup of ginger tea or eat a bunch of those delicious slices of pink ginger with your sushi meal. This is more or less what occurs according to new research published in the February 2010 edition of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Those of us who keep an eye on these things have known for many years that several compounds found in the ginger rhizome have anti-cancer activity. Phytonutrients such as zingerone, gingerol, curcumin and paradol have strong anti-mutagenic activity. Not only do they protect against DNA damage and the inflammation that underlies most types of cancer, but they also have the ability to kill existing cancer cells.

Now researchers based in Taiwan and the USA have discovered that another ginger-based compound, shogaol also has powerful anti-cancer activities.

Shogaol - the Japanese name for ginger - is a pungent compound similar to gingerol that contributes to this spice's delicious flavor. More importantly, the researchers have found that this compound has the ability to induce leukemia cells to commit hara-kiri - or as the scientists like to call it - apoptosis.

Human cells have a built-in timer, the HRK (hara-kiri) gene that programs them to die within a given time frame. This process is called apoptosis - and, as cancer cells do not have this lifespan limiting factor programmed into their DNA, they are more or less immortal and continue to proliferate.

However, in spices such as ginger we have allies that can actually induce apoptosis in several cancer cell lines. By means of several mechanisms these compounds have the ability to interfere with cancer at both DNA and cellular level thereby inducing apoptosis in a number of different malignancies.

Ginger based shogaol now joins this elite group of cancer fighting compounds as this current laboratory-based research shows that it has the ability to induce apoptosis in human leukemia cells.

It will be a long time before anyone will be using shogaol in clinical trials to see if it can successfully treat existing malignancies such as leukemia. However this research does reiterate what many of us have been saying for a long time - that common, culinary herbs and spices contain compounds that have the ability to protect us against cancer and several other diseases.

People often complain that their gums are receding, but more often this is a problem of enamel having worn away from the tooth, exposing the softer underlying dentin. Sometimes both enamel wear and gum recession occur together. Of course there is also actual gum recession due to loss of attachment to the tooth root usually accompanied by bone loss, but that is a discussion for another time.

What is buccal erosion or abrasion? Often teeth get dished out or notched areas at the gum line. These are usually, but not always on the outer cheek or lip side of the tooth. They are sometimes, but not always sensitive to touch or temperature.

There are three main causes of this condition. Often a combination of the three causes have contributed to the problem over time. The first cause is abrasion. Abrasion is actual wear on the tooth surface caused by an overly abrasive toothpaste or aggressive brushing habits. The most common areas for this problem to occur are at the gum line in the corners of the mouth, both upper and lower and the front teeth.

The second cause is acid erosion. This can be from citric or carbolic acids in fruit and soft drinks or other acidic foods. It can also be from regurgitated stomach acids, a condition known as acid reflux. Many people suffer from mild acid reflux and don't even realize it. This type of erosion can occur almost anywhere on the teeth, including the cusp tips and inside surfaces if acid reflux is the cause.

The third cause is called abfraction. Abfraction is the flaking away of the thinner enamel at the gum line that occurs from heavy stress on the teeth caused by bruxing (grinding) or clenching the jaws. This type of problem will usually show up more in the molar areas on the outer gum line surfaces of the teeth.

It is important to identify the causes of the problem and not just to fix the dished out or sensitive areas with bonding. This is of course the first step, but it is also important to try to remove the cause of the problem. In the case of abrasion, a careful study of tooth brushing patterns, toothpastes used and toothbrush hardness will help eliminate overly abrasive habits.

Acid reflux is a more complex problem and a referral to a physician can be helpful in identifying and treating this condition. Treatment for bruxism or tooth grinding and clenching can range anywhere from simple occlusal guards (often called night guards) to complex restorative and even surgical intervention. This is because the problem can be caused by both psychological and physical factors and can range from mild tooth damage to severe jaw joint problems. Almost all treatments for this condition will involve an occlusal guard at some point, however, so this is a good starting point when this condition has been identified since it is very easy to make and non-invasive. The town of Castelleone, population 9 thousand, located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) southeast of Milan starts their Bonfire of San Guiseppe early on March 19 when runners carry a small statue from the Sanctuary of Caravaggio to the Church of Santa Maria of Misericordia. Bet you didn't think that the best leg and butt exercise ever can acually be done anywhere, anytime and with no equipment whatsoever?!

Well, it's true! And it's called a Pistol Squat!

A pistol squat is simply a single leg squat. Simple?

Well, maybe not. You stand on one leg, holding your free leg straight in front of you, parallel to the floor. You then push the hips back as you lower them down, aiming to sit on an imaginary stool behind you. At the bottom you should be sitting all the way back on your calf. You then stand all the way back up and repeat.

This is a lot harder than it sounds, however! You need a massive amount of strength throughout your entire body, as well as good movement patterns and flexibility. But as it really is one of the ultimate exercises you can learn (one to impress your gym-buddies with!) so I highly recommend you give it a go.

Next time you are 'stuck' with no equipment, wondering how on earth you will be able to get a good workout in, give The Pistol a try!

Here are a few steps to take to help you master The Pistol.

You should ensure that before you attempt a pistol, you have a strong 2 legged squat and can perform this all the way to the ground - this in itself is a challenge and many will struggle below 90 degrees. So work on that first. You may find that holding a kettlebell in front of your chest actually helps you get low, as it counterbalances the tendency to fall backwards (the same applies to the pistol itself). You can build up to this by placing a low box or step behind you, and over time, using a lower and lower step until you can lower all the way down unaided.

The next stage is to make sure you have good balance while standing on one leg - my regular yoga practice has certainly helped me in this respect but many people rarely test or develop their balance! Practice standing on one leg and holding for as long as you can, without wobbling. To challenge even further, lift one leg up in front of you and even to the side, or try closing your eyes or moving your head from side to side (you'll be surprised how much you rely on grounding your vision on a certain point to help with balance!).

If you have limited flexibility you will struggle with the full pistol. There is not a simple way to build flexibility, you simply need to ensure you stretch your tight muscles on a regular and ongoing basis - again, yoga is good for this! Also incorporating regular foam rolling into your training plan is a very good idea - you can get a manual explaining that in more detail from the member site listed below.

You may find that as you try the different stages to build up to the full pistol, your flexibility naturally improves as you are beginning to use your body through it's full range of motion.

When you are ready to try squatting with one leg, you want to start with a supported version to take some of the strength and balance element out of the equation.

Find a support, such as a door frame, and use that for support as you go through the one legged squat motion. This will also highlight other areas you need to work on - such as your flexibility.

The next stage is the 'single-leg get-up'. Sit on a seat and lift one leg in front of you. Using your leg strength and keeping the leg out in front, simply stand up on one leg. Then slowly lower yourself back down to the step or box and repeat.

As you get stronger through the leg, butt and core you can begin to use a lower and lower step, until you are ready to go all the way without.

The Pistol is certainly a challenge, but one well worth setting yourself. When you finally achieve lift off, as you rise from your first ever full pistol, you will understand why!

Baltimore Ravens History Unique

The Baltimore Ravens history is relatively short considering their inception was in 1996. They are a part of the AFC North Division and were established via a move of the Cleveland Browns team to Baltimore in 1995. Art Modells intentions were to move the team along with their name, players and equipment to Baltimore. The NFL commissioner at the time arranged for Modell to leave all names, colors, uniforms, and franchise information in Cleveland. The commissioner's decision kept the option open for a new Cleveland Browns team to be re-established sometime in the future. Thus, Art moved his team to Baltimore and began playing in 1996, hence Baltimore Ravens history began as an expansion team. Eventually, a new franchise was created for Cleveland in 1999, keeping their name and colors.

The history of the Baltimore Ravens is unique considering their transition from their former town in Cleveland. Unlike other NFL franchises that moved to another location, the Ravens established a new team name, new colors, and an entire new franchise. This loss left many Browns fans feeling abandoned and angered. The Browns fans had always been loyal and dedicated,hence the move was not taken kindly. The move, however, created a new fan base for the team, and most of the original Browns players were traded, retired, or moved on to other endeavors.

The Heart of a Successful Relationship

I like to think of successful relationship as being built thought by thought, heart beat by heart beat.

Back in the early days of my personal addictions experience, and I do mean early, when the outcome was far from assured, for even a day at a time, I heard some wise person say that thinking about what you had to be grateful for was a good habit to cultivate, and so I did.

I got it that when I felt resentful or afraid that I should switch my thought to something I was grateful for, and very quickly I felt better, much better.

The problem was that 'feel good' feeling did not last long.

For awhile I thought I was destined to only very brief moments of the feel good chemistry in my body, until I got it that my feelings are linked to my thoughts and that if I regularly repeat gratitude thoughts I have longer and longer periods of feeling good. (This was long before I had ever heard of REBT or CBT, which perhaps was just an inkling in Aaron Beck's mind).

I believe that successful relationship is built the same way. Successful relationship is a function of short bursts of thinking and feeling and regular practice of those thoughts which leave you feeling good about your relationship(s). (Gratitude is the Attitude).

How short a burst are you talking about?

Heart beat by heart beat.

(You can get more precise and use EEG biofeedback, which works in cycles per second).

After all, if your heart stops, do you need to worry about relationship.

Can we break our awareness of our thoughts down to heart beat by heart beat?

Yes we can, using a wonderful biofeedback tool called heart rate variability biofeedback.

But before we talk about heart rate variability biofeedback, I want to mention that many relationship experts talk about relationship as a function of doing exercises which build intimacy.

In particular, Robert Epstein,Ph.D., has written recently about how couples in arranged marriages in India succeed in staying together for a life time and growing in happiness even though they may have met once prior to their wedding.

John Gottman,Ph.D., has studied couples for 30 years and put together a workshop that couples can do together to learn the skills that the couples that Gottman calls the Masters of Marriage do naturally.

And Helen Fisher,Ph.D., has done wonders describing the process of romantic love, how it works, and why it works.

But none of them talk about how fast this wonderful brain of ours works to change the chemistry in my body.

Paul Ekman,Ph.D., another wonderful researcher, has been studying facial expressions for 30 years, and has discovered that some of what we humans do with our expressions is cross cultural. For example, all of us humans respond to a look of contempt in about 1/25th second. That is about 2 and 1/2 times faster than I can blink my eyes, and I am going to argue that for successful relationship to happen, I need to manage my thinking as quickly or as close to that quickly in order to give myself a choice.

Most often, I am going to feel the deepest hurt when my mate looks at me contemptuously, and if I am not careful, I will respond with anger, which covers the primary emotion of hurt, faster than I can create a question asking about her feelings right now.

In that 1/25th second, my physiology has created a response which impacts the success of my relationship.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a tool to use to get back to my heart's affiliative and cooperative intelligence in a heart beat?

After all, just because my mate is contemptuous of some choice of mine doesn't mean I need to respond without thinking, does it?

Successful Relationship Heart Beat by Heart Beat

About ten years ago, I ran across mention of the heart rate variability biofeedback tool in an EEG biofeedback list serve, and decided to try it out.

Heart rate variability biofeedback, is a tool that grew out of the discoveries in a new field of scientific inquiry called neurocardiology, which is the study of the heart's own nervous system.

Your heart has a lot of neurons in it, as does your gut, enough neurons that the heart can learn and make decisions on its own.

The heart regulates its own beat and sends a great deal of data up about emotions, and that heart intelligence, when I activate it, is cooperative and affiliative.

In other words, I can establish a cooperative and affiliative (like gratitude) physiology heart beat by heart beat.

This physiology is not contingent on anything other than my thoughts and feelings, and it feels good, and I can cue it regularly, and keep it for long periods of time.

Sounds like the perfect physiology for successful relationship doesn't it?

Of course, my anger management clients and domestic violence clients will argue that both people need to learn it, and I say that is very doable.

Imagine this. Each partner learns individually how to do heart rate variability biofeedback, then I bring them together, hook them up to tandem computers, ask them to get coherent, and then hold hands.

What emerges is a heart beat of the relationship, and both partners get it that they impact this heart beat, a living, breathing heart beat, by each thought they have.

They can keep the relationship heart beat coherent by attending to it in brief, regular bursts of attention, perhaps every five minutes for two heart beats.

I can do that without missing a keystroke on my computer.

By the way, this kind of work does not mean that there won't be issues to address and settlements to negotiate around sex, vacations, savings, parenting, ect.

What it does mean is that both members of the relationship can argue their values and ideas from a physiology of cooperation and affiliation.

Each successful relationship has a heart beat that the folks in it work to keep coherent, and now there is a coach for us to use.

Conquering Sugar Cravings - Part 1

Over the past few weeks I have often referred to the 'blood sugar rollercoaster' as we discussed the importance of maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.Cravings for sugar are a big part of the vicious cycle. Giving in to these cravings can be the start of a vicious circle where the next 'fix' leads to more intense 'highs' and subsequently to lower 'troughs'! Dealing with all the emotional and physical issues from ADD/ADHD is not something to be ignored by staying on the rollercoaster. Avoiding sugar cravings, and properly managing them when they do occur, should therefore be one of your highest nutritional priorities.

Examples to Handle Sugar Cravings:

Make sure that you are 'powered up' throughout the day: It is vitally important that you do not get to the stage where you are so famished that you will eat whatever crosses your path! The golden rule that you should always remember in this regard is: Less food, more often! Do not skip a meal and include snacks that are small with the nutrition needed without the excess sugar. Doing will help maintain a steady flow of energy and prevent your body from going to 'panic stations' in order to get more glucose into the bloodstream.

Carefully monitor portion sizes: Study after study have shown that most of us will always attempt to clear out plates, no matter how ridiculously big that plate may be! Basically, we tend to eat most of what is on our plate. Therefore, the more food on the plate, the more you will consume! Eating big portions regularly is an almost 'fool proof' recipe for sugar rushes (and lethargy to boot). A large quantity of glucose (sugar) is released into the blood stream after the body breaks down all the food consumed that is not needed. This spike will typically last for only a short time, leaving you deflated and, amazingly enough, hungry! Cutting your serving sizes is highly helpful. Just by ordering smaller meals when out, using smaller plates, and getting your own food can help you succeed.

Eliminate sugary drinks: Most medical experts regard our culture's near addiction to sugary soft drinks with alarm. Drinking a soda or other similar drink with 10 teaspoons of sugar is never looked at as a bowl of sugar in the same quantity! Flooding your system with huge amounts of sugar is almost guaranteed to result in a massive energy spike. Avoidance of soft drinks high in sugar might be the best thing for you. Even artificially sweetened drinks should be approached with care, as people react in different ways to the chemical used to artificially sweeten beverages. In some cases drinking 'diet' varieties can even be directly responsible for cravings. Not exactly the kind of thing that you would expect from a product that you use as a means of limiting sugar intake!

Try to include some protein on your breakfast menu: In the Egg Marketing Board once had a marketing campaign that centered around the slogan 'Go to work on an egg'! These are really solid methods in handling sugar cravings. Including protein in your breakfast meal could help avoid sugar cravings as research has chosen that the absence of the needed protein can bring about the cravings.

Eat chromium rich foods: Studies have shown that chromium can limit the effects of sugar rushes. If you go through a really tough patch as far as sugar cravings are concerned, it would be good to switch to a chromium rich diet for a while. Examples of chromium rich foods are mushrooms, peanuts and whole grains.

Add some spices to your food: There are some spices (notably cinnamon, cloves and bay leaves) that have proven to be quite helpful in reducing sugar cravings, which can lead to help for adhd symptoms. Think of a few dishes that will be well complemented by these spices and be sure to add them next time!

Be careful with fruit juices: It is generally better to drink fruit juices than sugary soft drinks. This does not mean however that you can drink unlimited quantities. Fruit juices contain (natural) sugars and can certainly cause a sugar spike if you drink too much. The big problem in this regard is that a regular glass of fruit juice will often contain the equivalent of several of the fruit in question. Decreasing the amount of fruit juice consumed can be done by drinking out of smaller glasses. It would be even better if you eat the fruit and drink water instead!

The problem with Apple's latest release, iPad, is that it cannot make up its mind what it wants to be. Or could that be its advantage?

Some tech experts announced Apple's new, not-yet-released tablet, named iPad, as a marriage made in heaven between a smart phone and a laptop. Then some other tech experts looked closer and discovered that iPad can't take photos. Gasp! But that is something even dumb (never mind smart!) cell phones can do. And what about making or receiving good old fashioned phone calls? Nope, can't do that either.

Well, if it has no business in the smart phone gadgetry territory, then iPad must be the ultimate marriage made in heaven between a netbook and an e-reader, right? (A netbook is a light-weight and light-capacity laptop.) Well, it could be - if it was not for the fact that iPad cannot multitask (have multiple applications open) like the lowest of netbooks can. Wait, it also cannot browse the Flash sites on the internet like... yes, you've guessed it: like the lowest of netbooks can.

So, that leaves us with an e-book reader. But surely, Amazon's Kindle is the king of that turf?

Does that mean that iPad has only one way to go: to oblivion?

Perhaps. Though, as everybody knows, when talking about Apple it is never wise to say "never". After all, Apple was a late-comer in the smart phone market, but iPhone still managed to set the standards for the whole industry). Perhaps iPad will define new standards for a smartbook - whatever that turns out to be.

One thing is clear: Apple sure knows how to create a buzz around its products.

The attractive pricing leaves no doubt that Apple is determined to conquer the world with its iPad. The price for the 16GB model will be $499. The 32GB model will sell for $599 and the 64GB model for $699. The 3G wireless capability will cost $130 extra.

Garden Salads - Always A Tasty Treat

Nowadays, new varieties of designer salads can be found all over, which means that we no longer have to put up with the usual plain salad of lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes on our menu. There are also a huge variety of herbs to be found which means that we can add interesting flavours to our salads and other dishes.

Easy Garden Salad

Pick a handful of rocket and trim down any overly long stems. Choose a handful of lamb's lettuce and mizuna and tear some leaves of frisee into tiny pieces. Wash the concoction and then make sure that they are dried out.

Put the salad leaves into a bowl and add a variety of herbs, i.e. chervil, parsley and lemon thyme. Add a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and a teaspoon of lemon juice and toss to cover the leaves. add a dash of salt and pepper, toss again and serve. This should feed upto 4 people.

Tomato Salad

Slice up 2 beefsteak tomatoes horizontally and cut 4 plum tomatoes into quarters. Cut 12 red cherry tomatoes in half and do the same for gold cherry tomatoes. Arrange the tomatoes in a dish and add half a teaspoon of sea salt and half a teaspoon of caster sugar, then pour over 5 tablespoons of olive oil. Scatter with a handful of shredded basil and leave it standing for half an hour before serving to allow the flavours to mix. This serves upto four.

Tasty Potato Salad

Clean 1 lb 12 oz of small potatoes, i.e. jersey royals and cook in boiling water for about 20 minutes until they are tender. Drain and slice the potatoes in two whilst they are still warm. Put into a serving dish and add 3 tablespoons of chopped fresh herbs, i.e. parsley, basil and chives.

Add 6 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of white wine, then season well with salt and pepper and mix the contents of the dish together. This is best served whilst still warm and should serve four people.

Delicious Coleslaw

Finely shred halve of a white cabbage. Grate and core 2 carrots and slice up 2 green apples. Chop up 2 celery sticks and 3 spring onions and place all the ingredients into a large bowl. In another bowl, mix together 5 fl oz of mayonnaise and the same amount of yoghurt, and add 1 teaspoon of french mustard and a tablespoon of lemon juice and season with salt and pepper.

Add the dressing to the salad vegetables and mix the dish up well. The coleslaw should be served garnished with a little chopped herbs. This should serve upto four people.

For example, combining a +1 and a +3 lens will result in a +4 effect. Macro photography experts recommend you attached the higher-powered lens first and then add on the other diopters in order of highest power to lowest power. One factor of macro digital photography for beginners to consider is that you may also need to use a teleconverter lens, which allows you to slightly back away from the subject and still get your shot. If you're an athlete of just about any kind and have been one for any length of time -- and you're a man -- chances are you or another athlete pal of yours has suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon.

The Achilles tendon is that ropey fibrous tissue that connects your heel to the muscles of your lower leg. It's named for the Greek god Achilles whose mother, the goddess Thetis, heard a prophecy that her son would die young. So she dipped him into the River Styx to protect him, yet she held him by his heels and his feet/ankles never touched the water, making that part of his body vulnerable. Achilles' was struck on his "unprotected" heel by an arrow during the Trojan War, killing him. (According to Wikipedia.org, the first use of Achilles tendon to describe this part of the human anatomy took place in 1693 by Flemish/Dutch anatomist Philip Verheyen.)

If you've ever experienced an Achilles tendon rupture, you know how excruciatingly painful it can be. Some victims have described the pain as feeling as if they've been shot in that area.

A rupture of the Achilles tendon is not uncommon, although most people who experience the rupture are men (the ratio of Achilles tendon rupture sufferers is 20:1, men to women). Most rupture the tendon while playing sports, often when they jump up and land awkwardly. Yet ruptures can occur -- rarely -- when stepping off curbs or even tripping on high heels, so long as the force of the misstep or landing is powerful enough. Dancers also rupture these tendons relatively frequently (relative to the sports athletes).

An Achilles tendon rupture can be misdiagnosed as an ankle sprain; a podiatrist will examine the injured area and, if he or she feels a gap above the heel, a rupture has occurred.

You’ll more than likely not be able to walk very well or at all on the affected leg. You won’t be able to step off the ground; neither will you be able to stand on your toes.

Your podiatrist may recommend surgery. If so, the surgeon will make an incision on the back of your leg and literally stitch the tendon back to together. If your rupture was serious, the surgeon may take another, smaller muscle and wrap it around your Achilles tendon. This helps keep the tendon strong.

Non-surgical treatment will probably see your foot/ankle pointed downwards in an enclosed cast for six to eight weeks.

To help prevent Achilles tendon rupture, be sure to stretch the back of your leg by the ankle each and every time before exercising any type of sport -- and watch your step and jumps.

What is an MRI?

If you have been injured in an accident the most important task you have is to seek medical attention immediately. After your injuries have been treated and your condition has been diagnosed you may be ordered by your physician to get more tests. One of the test they may order is called Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). This is a non-invasive way to take internal pictures of the body. Unlike X-Rays and Computed Tomographic (CT) scans, which use radiation, the MRI uses powerful magnets and radio waves. The MRI scanner contains a magnet. The magnetic field produced by an MRI is about 10 thousand times greater than the earth's.

This is done by the magnetic field forcing hydrogen atoms in the body to line up in a certain way, much the same way a needle on a compass moves when you hold it near a magnet. When radio waves are sent toward the lined-up hydrogen atoms, they will bounce back. A computer will then record the signal. Different signals are sent by different tissues. The signal sent back by healthy tissue is slightly different than the signal sent by cancerous tissue.

Single MRI images are called slices and these slices can be stored on a computer or printed on film. The width of the slice can affect the quality of the image produced. An MRI can easily be performed through clothing. However, because the magnet is very, very strong, certain types of metal can cause significant errors, called artifacts, in the images.

The accuracy of the MRI may not be as fool proof as we have been lead to believe. An MRI reading may indicate that there is not a problem, a negative MRI, but in actuality there is a problem that is not detected. MRI's have been regarded as a highly effective way to get information on internal issues in the body. They have been used for years as evidence of injuries caused by an auto accident. The most common injury from a car accident found would be a bulging or herniated disc.

One man reported that he had an MRI after a fall and the scan showed nothing except bulging disks. He was told that bulging disks were normal. He was instructed to do neck exercises. He followed the exercise regime and eventually felt better. A year later he fell again and suffered the same symptoms but they were more painful and debilitating. The symptoms didn't lessen so he had another MRI which showed a nerve impingement that was diagnosed as serious enough to cause paralysis if he did not have surgery to widen four to five vertebrae and free the trapped nerves.

There are many explanations as to why scans can render such diverse results. MRI's are performed by Radiology centers which then send the reports to the doctors. Doctors can never be sure if the MRI was done well, interpreted well or if the machine is used is the most current available. The results can also be affected by the manner the scan was performed. If the width of the picture slice is too wide it might be hard to read. Some companies don't even take an MRI of the entire spine if a cervical, lumbar or thoracic MRI is ordered. They set gaps between the slices. This cuts down on the time required completing the MRI, but it also creates inaccuracies since there are no images of the gaps. If the disc herniation falls within the gap there would be no image of it. The thought is that more MRI's can be scheduled by reducing the time required for each MRI. This will result in inaccurate reselts as well as more profits for the testing facility.

The vet needs to examine the toy very carefully... give it a squeeze and a prod, look into its ears and check its teeth, until she has diagnosed an imaginary illness. Across the world on February 14th, many flowers, cards and gifts will be exchanged between loved ones, as St. Valentine's day is celebrated.

However, the story of why we celebrate this day is a bit of a mystery.

The tradition of St. Valentine's Day mixes elements of both ancient Roman rites and Christian tradition. Just to confuse matters further, three different saints called Valentine are recognised by the Catholic Church.

One legend is that Valentine was a priest in Rome during the third century. Emperor Claudius II decreed that marriage was to be outlawed for young men, as he thought that single men made better soldiers than those who were married with families.

Valentine, felt the decree was unjust and unfair, and defied the Emperor by performing secret marriages for young lovers. When his actions for undercover lovers was discovered, Claudius ordered valentine be executed. Variations on this legend say that Valentine was put to death for trying to help fellow Christians escape from harsh Roman prisons where they were often tortured.

According to another legend, Valentine may have actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself in 270 AD the day before he was to be executed for refusing to renounce his Christian beliefs. Allegedly he sent note of appreciation to his jailer's blind daughter for bringing him food and delivering messages while he was imprisoned, signed "from your Valentine.

While we can never be certain as to the true origin of the St. Valentine legend, one thing is for certain, it must have been an appealing and enduring story because by the Middle Ages, Valentine had become one of the most popular saints in France and Britain.

The timing observance of his saint's day may have been driven by the common place practice of trying to integrate previous pagan festivals into the Christian calendar. in this case, the Lupercalia festival.

In ancient Rome, February was seen as the beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and wheat throughout the interiors (we still refer to Spring Cleaning to this day).

Lupercalia, which began on the 'ides (15th) of February', was a fertility festival dedicated to the agricultural god Lupercus and to the Goddess of Love, Juno, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. Roman maidens placed their names into an urn set up in the public squares and young single men drew from it to get a 'blind date' for the coming year. More often than not, these annual matches often ended in marriage.

St. Valentine's Day was set at February 14th by Pope Gelasius, at around 500 AD. By this time, the 'lottery' system for romantic dating was deemed un-Christian and had been outlawed. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London.

In the United Kingdom, St. Valentine's Day became a popular celebration around the 1600's. It continued to take hold, with the familiar "roses are red, violets are blue" verses making their debut sometime in the seventeenth century. By the 1850's, it was common for lovers from all social standings to give their adored ones small gifts or handwritten letters. At the same time, in France, people began to decorate their valentines with ribbons and lace.

By the start of the twentieth century, the handwritten letters gave way to cards as advances in printing technology had improved the quality of printed cards. At the time, it was culturally discouraged for people to show their emotions in such a direct way as a letter, so a printed card was a more acceptable method. More affordable postage costs and increasing use of the postal system probably contributed to the rise in popularity of the Valentine's card.

For the purposes of most businesses however, you can reach a reasonable approximation of the lender's position by looking at the value of your property and a discounted value of your debtors, of say 70%, to approximate what might be recovered in an insolvency, compared to your level of borrowings. If your business has plant and machinery of significant value you will need to in the realisable value of this as well.

This should allow you to estimate how confident of recovering its money, or how exposed about its lending, the bank will be feeling, before you approach them with your plan and to discuss the support you are seeking.

You can then roll this calculation forward based on your forecast balance sheet and cash flow to see how your plan will affect the lender's security position.

When you understand whether you are asking them to become more exposed or if your action will help them to improve their position, you can tailor your approach to them to ensure their support and anticipate their requirements and questions.

Of course these days a business may not have a simple single bank funding position. Many companies may, for example, have a factor or invoice discounter providing funding against the debtors, while another lender provides a mortgage on the property. So what you should do in your quest to find true love is take her personality test, find out what type you are, and what the other types are, and then get out there and narrow your choices to compatible types.

A client of mine asked me a simple but important question recently.

He said "Graham, how do I gain trust with my customers on my website ?"

Simple question - and critical to your business success, whether your business is online or offline.

Customers will make decisions to buy based on their feeling of trust towards the supplier - in this case, your business as shown on your website. If they don't trust you from the get-go, they probably won't be interested in what you have to offer. Of course price is important as is the quality of what you are offering. But where there is a feeling of trust, the customer will more likely buy from you - and where two items are very similar, even identical, trust is the factor which will sway the customer.

And you know what ? The higher the trust, the concern about price goes down. In other words, the more you build trust, you increase the chances of making the sale and the customer will pay more when they know they trust the supplier.

So what's this got to do with creating your website ? Well, your website is your 'window' for the customer to look in, it's your store front. This will likely be the first time the visitor will get to check you out.

This is the opportunity not only to present what you have in a way that creates impact - but importantly is the best opportunity to start to build trust.

So I come back to the question my client asked me. What are the things you can do on your website to have the customers start to trust you ?

Here's four ways you can start to build trust on your web page:

1.Offer something of value to the visitors to your site - and make it free. Let's say you're a florist: what about a tip sheet on simple flower arranging to create effect. If you're in the financial planning business offer a ready reckoner on a savings plan.

2.Newsletters are a good idea. In doing this, indicate the sort of things that will be covered in the newsletter, indicate the value they'll get, make them want to look forward to receiving it. And then deliver concise and valuable information in your newsletter regularly.

3.Set out your website clearly. Visually confusing pages don't easily lead to trust - people 'subconsciously' think "What are they trying to hide?" So clear and straightforward. And make it easy for them to look around your site as they learn more about you and your business.

4.Make it easy for them to contact you. Sometimes with web pages I look at, the contact details are almost obscure , giving me the feeling that they don't want me to contact them. The contact details you set out should almost have them feel you're inviting them to contact you - the way you set this out will show your willingness to have contact with the customers, that there are 'real' people behind the website. This shows that 'real' people are running the business.
